Industry control over Welsh music or pure stupidity?

I’m very much aware that alot of artists/musicians are on twitter just to keep up appearances, and that the majority of ‘big’ artists are controlled by their respective labels to advertise gigs and various releases (of which I stay widely clear of) but still I’ve just been greatly baffled (and somewhat infuriated) by a post on twitter.

I’ve been following the offical bbc wales music twitter account for quite awhile now (and recently have been followed back, don’t know whether thats a good thing) in hope of finding some undiscovered gem of welsh talent via this medium, only to view twit after twit of either Lost Prophets, Funeral for a friend and marina and the diamonds.

Still, i’ve kept on reading their twits and following the account reguardless in the hope that something will pop up.

Today has been a turning point, bbc wales music just re-twited this from a man named ‘Aled Phillips’ (the singer from Kids in glass house’s):

“go listen to our new album #dirt over at myspace.com/kidsinglasshouses.

let me know what you think! then buy tickets for tour! weee. RT”

What a discustingly arrogant piece of sell absorbed tripe - to say the least

It really is hurtful to see two accounts (Aled and Bbc wales music) just mindlessly spewing out advertising for the record industry.

But, it is however this can be viewed as a positive. Something we as musicians can use to build apon on how we shouldn’t present ourselves, how we shouldn’t recklessly promote our own careers, and (most importantly) how we shouldn’t talk and interact to our fans and audiences.

Some awesome links for musicians

I read two pretty cool links yesterday and I’d love all my musician friends to check them (I assure you that there will be something that can help you out in one of these ).

1) First link is from the website of a looping guitarist named Matt Stevens.

He’s deadicated a page on his website to some kick ass tips for DIYing it, ranging from basic useful websites to getting your music onto Itunes as well making your own podcasts.

A worthy read!

2) Second link is an article posted on a website called techdirt.com.

It talks about a new music model (that in my eyes has been developed by artists for artists), it features the fundementals of what YOU need to be thinking like to survive as an artist/band in the modern age.

If your planning on creating a career as a musician, this article is a must.

After around 5 mins of messing around with my loop pedal the other night I decided to record my idea and improvise over it.

Apart from abit of reverb the track is otherwise un-mixed.

I’d love comments on this track, suggestions and constructive critism are very much welcome, i’m not going to improve unless someone tells me!
